00 The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, 2000, model, drawing and detail of the site planned to be built in the National Mall, Washington, USA. The proposal was submitted with the collaboration of architect Peter Keinan and Brigitte Hadany and was one of five finalists The visitor would be walking down a gradual slope, fenced by rising side walls. Multi-directional paths would lead to a main square, near the bank of a lake, in whose center stands the silent podium. The square and the podium create a sensation of an open-air church, awaiting the arrival of a speaker. The surrounding walls support a ring of light, made of glass penetrated by thousands of optic fibers, screening pictures and milestones from Martin Luther’s life. Each visitor chooses a path to the square, gradually discovering its significance, while hearing exerts from Luther’s speeches resounding from the walls and accompanying him to the square where he will meet other visitors, who chose their own path.
